Information

The presence of police officers can cause two kinds of responses - one of safety because they are there to look out for you, and one of insecurity because there must be a reason for them being there.

The research shows that people are divided according to their feelings of social grounding and existential security. If they have a permeating anxiety and fear of the unknown, they are more likely to answer in the positive. If they answer in the negative, they are more likely to think of themselves as independent and resilient.

Instructions for the two groups

Instructions for Group A

Next time you see a police car or officer, see if you can find the reason for his presence. Unruliness, young people loitering and alcohol consumption? What does these phenomena do to you?

Instructions for Group B

Next time you see a police car or officer, follow them and see if they provide you with a sense of security. What does it do to you to be looked after?

COMMENTS ON THIS TRIAL

July 17, 2013, 5:54 a.m.

I have been a victim of a break-in, so seeing cops in my neighborhood makes me feel safer. The only time I feel uneasy is when I am being followed by a cop while driving.
