Those who draw will also be visualising, because they will need to look at the image to draw it. So this trial is actually only investigating if drawing is an effective learning method.

Instructions for the two groups

Instructions for Group A

Type the word "randomise" into your favourite search engine and scroll down until you find an interesting, unusual and complex image, preferably a diagram with labels. Make a note of the URL of the image and of the day and time. Now draw out and label your image on a piece of paper. You can be as artistic as much or as little as you wish. This should take about 5 minutes. Keep your drawing, but don't look at it or the online image for a week. After a week, and without looking at your drawing or at the online image, try to draw out your image again for 5 minutes. When you have finished, you can look at your first drawing and the online image to compare. How accurate is your new drawing compared to the online image you studied a week ago? 1=unrecognisable and 10=identical.

Instructions for Group B

Type the word "randomise" into your favourite search engine and scroll down until you find an interesting, unusual and complex image, preferably a diagram with labels. Make a note of the URL of the image and of the day and time. Now study your image visually for 5 minutes (do not draw, speak or write anything). Don't look at the image for a week. After a week, and without looking at the online image, try to draw out your image again for 5 minutes. How accurate is your drawing compared to the online image you studied a week ago? 1=unrecognisable and 10=identical
